gruusig

There are a few word that won’t translate properly from Swiss German into German (or English, I guess). “Gruusig” (say [groosigg, with oo like in goose ] is one of them.

I guess my ancestors invented “gruusig” in November to get a decent adjective describing what the weather can be like in this month, and in the months that follow. I imagine them sitting in the little wooden house, up there on the hills, under a grey sky, without proper heating, talking to their cows and trying to invent chocolate in order to have an alternative to cheese in the winter months. They sit there, watch the dark wet fir trees under an immensely grey skey, and say: “s’isch gruusig dusse” (it is “gruusig” outside).

“Gruusig” is something ugly, disgusting, awful. Besides the weather, a lot of other things can be “grussig“: things you find on the street, a dress, a face, a perfume….

Today, the weather is gruusig. I fill teaser samples because one day, one fine day I want this set of teaser samples to be ready. Preferably before spring, because I will change the way I present samples by then.

Fortunately they were always magicians who were making potions to be used during those gruusig days… For the whole year they were collecting the beauty of flowers, the freshness of grass, the lightness of a breeze, the power of trees, the brightness of sunlight and the warmth of spices and making their magic potions stopping them into small bottles for those gruusig days. Now you call them perfumers, you know? :o)

Dear Andy, about yes, seems I has understood, what the such “Gruusig”- I had today a bitter experience of it.
Good day to you, despite gruusig behind a window:)

I wish you a lovely day, too. Greetings from behind a window ;-)

Aromax: What a lovely line. Perfumes are like a preserve of summer flowers. Now, that’s a treat!

Hi Andy, While the weather may be gruusig, your perfumes remain beautiful! And Sylvia how are Bandit and Depp? :) Linda you must think of a catchy tune to cheer up the day!

    Hi Jen
My mood is wonderful and I can’t wait to become totally euphoric after Linda’s proposed a happy tune for today ;-)

And this is for Linda: 800 iso, and place the camera on the table. Do not hold it. ;-)

Here in the tropics there are some days, though not all too often, that the sun cannot penetrate the grey, misty atmosphere. And this always reminds me of those melancholic cold-wet-grey-gruusig feelings that can gripe you during the European winter months. Luckily, the mercury here doesn’t really drop much and makes this nostalgic experience a welcome change to the heat, humidity, and blinding brightness.
What a heart warming thought, this summer flower preserve. Before the era of central heating and double or triple pane windows, you had those lovely “Ice flowers” forming on the windows, though they were devoid of any scent what ever.

A song for THIS day, the 20th Anniversary of the take-down of the Berlin Wall, meaning FREEDOM! for ALL, is John Mellencamp`s “When the Walls Come Crumblin` Down“ - and if this doesn`t get your moves and grooves on, even in the rain!, CHECK YOUR PULSE to be sure you HAVE one!!! :-) Mellencamp`s heritage plays into this theme, too! Thank you for the camera advice! The Atl is going to get a soaking tomorrow from tropical storm Ida`s demise, and our grounds are already soaked to the max! However, the hibiscus are loving every drop! :-)

  8. andy Says:

Yeah, right, Hotlanta Linda, actually today is a day worth celebrating!

And Stephan, it is a long while since I have last seen ice flowers. To much isolation of windows these days. But I remember them from my childhood. are you sure they do not smell of miracles and angels?

  9. Stephan Says:

Andy, it’s past midnight, maybe tomorrow I’ll know the answer, maybe not.

More “wall“ songs - puns are ok! - “Wonderwall“ by Oasis; THE obvious Pink Floyd “The Wall“; “When the Walls come Down“ by The Call; “Don`t Fall on Me“ by R.E.M.; and “Sledgehammer“ by Peter Gabriel - I mean, is there a BETTER tool for the job?? :-0 :-)

Hi Linda, good job on the S(ong)OTD! (I like the JM song the best). Usually it is the S(cent)OTD. LOL. Hope Ida was kind to you and didn’t give you much rain. We’re drenched in tropical storms as well—9 days in a row in fact. Stephan you are in the tropics? Where if you don’t mind me asking…Andy I hope you slept well and dreamt of ice flowers. :)

    Good moorrrrnning!
Hey,gruuusig,is that anything like “grässlich”?? Or just a genuine schwiiiitzer slang word!? ;)
Bandit is gonna be mine tomorrow or Thursday, the latest.the
major problem is the name for her and her brother…a short name, easily pronouncable for my parents(heheh),and that won’t make me like a nerd when I’m calling her in the garden(so no “Farinelli il castrati” for the machoman that’s beeing fixed!lol)..any ideas!?
Today,as we’re having a Gruusig day in Spain,I have some ebig spritzes of Rêverie..that’ll help!
