Where does the line go between perfume and not perfume. A classic philosophical question often represented by "how many grains of sand, minimum, constitutes a desert?". A musical analogy: If a group of musicians strike a chord and holds the same chord for two minutes and then breaks, I would not accept that as a "song", even at minimum. If they were to switch chords once, twice, I might consider it. In this case, I do not take artistic quality in regard. In what constitutes the minimum requirements for a perfume, is a certain artistic level also a necessity? It's a shame I haven't had a chance to smell this. From what I read in comments on basenotes, there is a musk chord in it that is not to everyone's delight... One aspect to consider then; what are the minimal adequate requirements? If you want to make a qualitative distinction in the domain of 'commercial' fragrances, maybe one should stick to the concentration of the fragrant oils in relation to the solvent, such as ethanol or other oils. Then you'd use the terms Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, Extrait de Parfum, and Attar. And if you want to make a statement about the artistry of a perfume, you could use terms like a fine fragrance, a topnotch perfume, a lovely creation, a simple fragrance etc. I don't think it appropriate to use the word perfume to make a distinction and set it apart to simpler, but still lovely creations, as Persolaise's first comment suggested. One of my favourite renditions of the note. Have you ever tried Caron's Les Plus Belles Lavandes? I agree wholeheartedly on the packaging thing. It should not matter yet it does. I like rather plain bottles the best, I think, and a fragrance as simple and straightforward as the Lavender does well in it. But very ornate fragrances sometimes do better in more elaborate ones. I really don't know what I would do were I a perfumer, but I am not and never will be. Thank you for this post. What fun to see you mention Caldey’s lavender.
