Launch or perish

July 19th, 2010

in an hour or so I will meet with the guys from Designers Club (to get an idea of them: there you go…->Designers Club Website, all new!). We will need to discuss profane stuff, such as an inlay for the box that I want to replace the paper: For a variety of reasons the paper does not work. Well, it works functionally. But esthetically it is not 100 % of what I want and -more important- it turned out to be much more work than initially expected.

You know: The tin box gets delivered with one piece of black paper, already assembled and folded to fit a flacon in the middle. But it turned out that one paper is not enough, hence…. we have to take another sheet of black paper, squeeze and roll it, fold it around a flacon and then put the flacon with the paper roll on its outside into the box.  I guess you get the idea. Maybe I can do a video later this week, when putting a lot of Rêverie au jardin into tins (for unclear reasons we see a boom of my lavender centered fragrance). Thus: I want an inlay. Subito. Or better: When I order the next batch of tins. As I order them in batches of 5000: Time to get this order out soon.

This week seems to be the week of questions focused on the general nature of things and the industry and its regulators. I got a couple of great interview questions to answer this week. Thus, there is this other issue to discuss with the designer guys: When shall I launch the next perfumes (Other than Carillon pour un ange), that are in the pipeline,  spring or autumn 2011, spring 2012?  A tough one.

Sometimes it feels like “LAUNCH OR PERISH” in this industry.

Dear Andy as it is difficult to hold so much problems in a head simultaneously with creativity – possibly you soon should expand staff?:-)

  2. Konstantin says:

Hi Andy, I have heard this same saying in most other industries as well so I am not that surprised. But it is true that it can sometimes feel like it is squandering creativity. And this is the sad part. And the part that probably partially is responsible for the horrible situation that we face in almost all industry – over saturation. KM

  3. Persolaise says:

Launch or perish? I guess that’s why so many companies keep pushing out flankers, isn’t it? But somehow, I don’t see you doing that any time soon…

PS You’re right about the scrunched up paper: it isn’t in keeping with the slick look of the tin and the bottle.

  4. Roxana says:

Ah, the shift in direction due to learning thing, I try to embrace such moments. In the end it is usually a good thing. Onward my friend!

  5. Jen says:

Hi Andy, but you are still going to release RV this fall right….please say so I can’t wait much longer than that! :) Have a great Monday.

  6. Silvia says:

    Hi everybody!!

There’s definitely been something going on here these last weeks, huh!? Wow,nice new blog-design,Andy!! And congrats for the first 5 years!!
Well, actually, the whole launch or perish thing makes me dizzy..I don’t need it. Don’t think any consumer needs it. In pefume,it really makes a brand look cheaper..it’s as (well it actually is)if they had to compensate lack of quality and originality with quantity..So,relaaaaax! ;)
i love the fact that Rêverie is getting more and more fans…it’s still my first love…
A big hug to all fellow “Tauerists”!!

  7. Andy says:

    Dear Silvia
great to see you here. It sure has been a while… indeed, the last weeks were weeks of a lot of activity. But slowly and surely we go on gear lower ;-) A fragrant hug from hot Zurich!

  8. Andy says:

    Dear Jen
I definitely, 100% plan to bring UNE ROSE VERMEILLE in autumn 2010. I filled 280 flacons and it waits patiently ;-)

  9. Andy says:

Yes, Roxana, I think so too. It IS important to listen to these moments… as rare as they are!

  10. Andy says:

Persolaise: A post-meeting comment. Yes, we will do an inlay, and aim for a paper -cardboard- inlay. No plastic…

  11. Andy says:

    Dear Konstantin
I could have given this post another name: The name of the game…. the flankers fibs… It is (sometimes) depressing. but mostly it is quite funny to see how fast the wheel turns these days.
    Have a great evening!

  12. Andy says:

OH, yes , Vladimir. I think the staff issue will be addressed in 2011 if things continue like that…

  13. Cymbaline says:

    Hello Andy,
I’ve been taking Carillon Pour Un Ange for a test-drive the last 2 days and it’s delightful! I am in agreement with the other commenters- don’t try to launch new fragrances too quickly. We are an impatient bunch and the internet doesn’t slow us down :) I know I’m always looking forward to smelling Tauer releases before I’ve really gotten to know the last one.

Hats off to you for all your hard work, it really makes for a quality product!
(P.S. Changing the word “profane” in your second sentence to “profound” would be a better choice ; )

  14. Andy says:

    Good evening, Cymbaline
Thank you for your compliments on the Carillon. Glad it works for you.
You know: In a sense, it is me who is impatient and pushy, too. I guess we all together get up to speed by the internet.
And thanks for the profane comment. Right you are! ;-)

  15. hotlanta linda says:

Hey, the fragrance market is `Wheel of Fortune` inspired!! You go w/ your instincts and heart when it comes to a launch, and all will be good. The Steve Miller Band`s “Fly Like An Eagle“ is for you just now!! :-) Reverie probably has a sales increase due to heatwave weather – lavender is quite cooling, yes??

  16. Devon Hernandez says:

I agree with Silvia – pushing out too many scents makes it look cheap. We’re always impatient for the next Tauer offering, but the wait is always worth it – and more time to enjoy the last one! I hope things get worked out the way you want them to for the box inlay – I’m sure whatever you decide will be great!

I can certainly understand the high demand right now for Reverie, as I have been wearing it quite a lot lately. There is a huge, blooming lavender bush on my walk to work that has been sending me (not so) subliminal messages :)

  17. Andy says:

    Dear Devon
I guess you and Silvia are right. Too fast, too furious=too cheap.
We decided to replace the paper inlay by a real cardboard inlay that is faster to put in, and that presents the product better …

  18. Andy says:

    Dear Hotlanta Linda
Actually, the demand for Rêverie au jardin is quite unique these days, and it is very geographically biased…

And you are so right about fly like an eagle! the perfect song for these days indeed. Wishing you a great day
